Frequently asked questions

Are you getting paid to review books?

No. I purchase every book that I read. Every review that I write is free.

Can I send you my published book to review?

No, but thank you! I always purchase a physical copy of every book. If you’d like me to review your published book, just send me a message in the contact section of the site. I’ll purchase a copy and review it.

Do you ever DNF books you don’t like?

I will never DNF a book that I’m reviewing. I try to focus on the things I like within the book. Also, if you DNF the book, how do you know there isn’t some redeeming quality towards the middle or end? If you don’t finish it, you’ll never know. I write my reviews through the good, bad and ugly. If this site was all 10/10 scores, it wouldn’t be much of a review site.

***If I don’t like a certain book, I will not be shouting it from the rooftops. I will not publish the review or market my review on social media at all. However, I will still be publishing the review on the site. (I will also not make it a “featured review” for obvious reasons)

Do you have spoilers in your reviews?

No. I write reviews with the potential reader in mind. I talk about the story, characters, and writing without giving away any details. I want every reader to be able to organically discover the book just the way I did. So even talking about specific characters and what I liked about them could potentially take away from someone else’s experience. I keep this all in mind when writing each review.

What separates you from other reviewers?

  • I purchase a copy of every book. I want to maintain my unbiased reviews.

  • No spoilers. I really comb through what I say and don’t say about a book so that you walk away knowing what I like and doin’t like instead of details about characters and story.

  • I do not DNF books. Indie authors need our love and support. They also need our criticism. I read every book in it’s entirety and express my opinion both good and bad. With that being said, you will find a lot of positive scores on this site due to it being handpicked by myself. I choose books to review that I think I’ll really like.

Why are there different formats for some of your reviews?

When I operated Roasted Book Reviews several years ago, my reviews were long and in-depth. Unfortunately, most people won’t read that much. So I’ve gone for a more casual thoughts review as you’d expect from a conversation at a tavern. This will also free me up for more reviews.
